I am very grateful to Dr Devora Lieberman, National President of SH&FPA for inviting me to speak today, although I am aware that she is unfortunately unable to join me.
I would like to begin by acknowledging your national organization that has been in existence for 80 years, and, with its state organisations has been a model for many of us in clinical work, training, resource development, sexuality education and work with those with disabilities.
Those of us working in New Zealand as I was until recently, have learned a great deal from our Australian counterparts, particularly here in NSW – it’s not often New Zealanders admit that, and the training of our IPPF colleagues from the Pacific has also been invaluable.
I was delighted to visit Sydney in 2003 when members of FPANZ’s National Council joined your Board for a meeting and signed an MOU. I am very pleased to see this develop into a more active relationship with the current PNG AusAID Project on STIs which we have begun work on together, with the PNG Member Association as one of the successful consortia funded by AusAID.
